TLDR

Google has modified the way news articles are shown in search results...

Website owners no longer need to submit their websites to Google News for their material to show up in the Google News and Related Stories SERP features, according to a recent Webmaster Central blog article. The blog article states: As with Search, content for News will henceforth be sourced exclusively from the internet.

All online content that complies with Google's technical and content criteria will be regarded as eligible for Google News, according to the Google News support documents.

There is no need to "apply" because Google automatically considers all online content for inclusion in Google News.

Additionally, Google has modified the way news articles are shown in search results, grouping articles by subjects and presenting them in carousels. To see what this means, look at the side-by-side comparison in the gif below.

Additional details like quotes and pertinent opinion articles will also be included on the cards that are displayed in the carousels.

BERT is used by Google News to determine whether something is news.

What else but its BERT technology powers the enhanced Google News functionality? The goal of BERT's story-understanding technology is to comprehend the people, places, and things that make up a news story and their relationships to one another within that narrative's context. The technology then groups individual articles into clusters based on these relationships.

Google claims that the new structure would enable search results to show more high-quality information rather than the most recent news. Additionally, it will enable them to integrate a variety of sources for each narrative.

Then, how can you submit your content to Google News without actually doing so?

There is nothing else you need to do after publishing content online to make it eligible for Google News. As said above, as long as it follows specific rules, that occurs automatically.

Technical and site structure requirements are included in these guidelines:

  • Make sure the URL for the page (or pages) containing your news category is permanent. As a result, your URL should always be example.com/news rather than something variables, like the month or year.
  • Ensure that each article has a distinct, permanent URL. Your website won't qualify for Google News if it alters the articles displayed at a URL or displays several articles on a single URL. This includes updating and republishing previously published articles.
  • Your articles should only be written in one language. If your website offers translations into other languages, publish each one independently and use the hreflang tag to explain to Google how they relate to one another.

In addition to content-based rules:

  • Original content that has not been plagiarised is required.
  • Dates, bylines, and author information should be apparent. Websites for publishers should also contain details about the business. Always choose transparency above secrecy.
  • Do not post more sponsored or compensated content than is necessary. The existence of any sponsorship (such as native advertising or affiliate links) should be made very obvious to readers of the article.
  • Identification and other delicate personal data (such as financial, medical, etc.) are prohibited.
  • Google News does not allow anything that purports to offer medical diagnosis or advice, or that is harassing, xenophobic, explicit, unlawful, or misleading.

There is nothing else you need to do to appear in Google News if your website and content fall into those categories. As Google loves to say, all you need to do is create excellent content. Users searching on mobile devices in the US and using the English language currently have access to these improvements. In the future, other locales and languages will be introduced.
